Steve has been working in the area of energy and environmental analysis for over 10 years. A selection of projects is shown below. Some of the projects were delivered through Circular Ecology, and some in previous roles.
Environmental Footprinting for Great Western Railway

Organisational Carbon Footprinting for First Group
Steve peer reviewed and helped to improve First Group’s international carbon footprint calculation, which is produced to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard. He advised on the selection of emission factors and collected data from across the American and UK parts of First Group for the 2015 footprint calculation. He aided integration of the data into CRedit360, a form of web-based sustainability management software.
Energy Analysis and LCA of Energy Technologies
As part of a UK-wide, academic and industrial SUPERGEN project, Steve assessed the energy and carbon performance of a range of micro-generation technologies, including a micro-wind turbine, solar hot water panel, solar photovoltaic system. Within full LCAs, he assessed the carbon payback time of each technology by comparing the embodied carbon of each technology with the carbon savings achieved during operation. The work supported environmental design improvements and marketing activities by the technology manufacturers. One of the studies was awarded the George Stephenson Prize by the IMechE.
Carbon Footprint of Electricity for Houses of Parliament
Steve led a project to systematically review carbon footprint studies of a wide range of electricity generation technologies. He used this to produce a concise briefing on the carbon footprint of electricity for the UK Houses of Parliament. The briefing has been used to inform debate in Parliament and policy making in Government, as well as being cited as a main source of information on carbon footprint data by the IMechE.
LCA of a Novel Washing Machine for Xeros Ltd
Steve led a life cycle assessment (LCA) of a novel prototype washing machine for Xeros Ltd. The work was peer reviewed by a panel and produced to compliance with ISO 14040/44, the international standards for LCA. It provided a robust investigation of the machine’s environmental performance, and thus supports marketing activities by the company.
Carbon, Water & Waste Footprinting for Clothing Companies
As part of the Sustainable Clothing Action Plan (SCAP), Steve provided carbon, water and waste footprinting support on behalf of WRAP to a variety of clothing brands, retailers and recyclers including Arcadia Group, Stella McCartney, NBrown and ClothesAid. He developed advanced, bespoke Excel tools for each company to manipulate large product sales datasets as part of the footprinting process. Steve’s approach and results received positive feedback from both WRAP and the client companies for being helpful, well communicated, on time, and to budget.
WRAP Clothing Knowledge Hub and Training Package
Steve provided the footprinting expertise in the development of WRAP’s Clothing Knowledge Hub, a publically available resource to inspire and inform clothing companies on how to reduce their carbon, water and waste footprints. Steve collaboratively developed and delivered a package of well-received training sessions on the Knowledge Hub to SCAP signatories including John Lewis, M&S, Ted Baker, Whistles and Debenhams.
Carbon Footprint of Grocery Products for Product Sustainability Forum
Steve led a project for WRAP’s Product Sustainability Forum (PSF) to systematically review carbon footprint and LCA studies for more than 200 grocery products. He designed a systematic data collection process for the project team and used a visual approach for summarising the data and associated uncertainties, to help the industry select priority products for environmental improvements.
Carbon and Water Footprint Calculator for Food and Diets
Steve led the development of a tool to assess the carbon and water footprint of a range of different meals and then whole diets. The tool was used for a successful MSc dissertation that investigated how dietary choice can affect the carbon and water footprint of individuals.
Embodied Water of Industrial Products for Innovate UK
Steve contributed to a research project for the Technology Strategy Board (now Innovate UK) to assess the water footprint of plastics, textiles and other manufactured materials, to help industry measure their water impact and identify low-water alternatives.
Embodied Carbon Assessment of an Eco-home Design
Steve assessed the embodied carbon of a novel eco-home building design for Devon-based Woodford Architecture and Interiors. He developed an Excel tool to assess the embodied carbon of each building component and enable more environmentally friendly materials selection. The assessment found that the design was significantly lower-carbon than conventional buildings, and gave a robust basis for public claims to this effect.
Mandatory Carbon Reporting for Tullett Prebon
Steve has assessed the global organisational carbon footprint of Tullett Prebon, to enable the company to comply with the UK’s Mandatory Carbon Reporting legislation. He developed excellent working relationships with property teams and transport fleet managers around the world for collection and analysis of data, and produced the carbon footprint assessment in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.
Corporate Carbon Target Setting for PHS Group
Steve developed an Excel tool and implemented two methods for setting science-based, corporate GHG reduction targets for PHS Group, a large workplace services provider.
Environmental Audits for ISO 14001 and 50001
Steve conducted two annual environmental audits and organisational carbon footprint assessments of Gemserv, to support its environmental and energy management systems (ISO 14001 and 50001). The assessments covered the GHG Protocol Scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as the business travel and staff commuting elements of Scope 3, and advised the company on reduction measures.
Peer Review of Product Energy and Water savings for PHS Group
Steve conducted a critical review of product energy and water savings calculations for PHS Group, a large workplace services provider, and developed an assurance statement covering the calculations. The work involved reviewing the validity of the calculation methods and data sources used, and advising on improvements in line with Green Claims Guidance.
Scientific Advice for Houses of Parliament
During two years as energy adviser at the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST), Steve provided scientific briefings to the POST Board, MPs, Peers and Select Committees. His concise and accessible analyses had impact in policy debates and were used by MPs, Parliamentary Select Committees, the Minister of Energy and Climate Change, the Committee on Climate Change, the IMechE and numerous commercial companies.
Project Management of Sustainable Procurement Support
Steve managed a team to engage and support FM organisations on behalf of Zero Waste Scotland, to improve the resource efficiency of procurement.
Carbon Reduction Planning for Local Authorities
A consortium of local authorities in the South East required a techno-economic assessment of carbon-reduction activities in their region. Steve analysed the on-the-ground reduction activities already ongoing, and developed a model to project how building regulations will affect greenhouse gas emissions from the building stock. He also provided training for local authorities on assessing their carbon reduction potential.
